Cuba's School of Latin American Medicine - ELAM - has been training new generations of doctors in social medicine - people from very poor and disadvantaged communities who commit to returning to live and work in those same commuities - and is now well established in Venezuela since the Cuban Venezuerlan Medical collaboration through the ALBA people's trade treaty. For some time north american stud...ents have been studying a different, people centred medicine in Cuba - and now some wonderful news for our mob is that applications are open for scholarships for Indigenous students to pursue medical studies in Venezuela - please watch the attached and share this news, fully funded scholarships to study medicine in the new, humanist model which is so much closer to our mobs way of doing things - brilliant!!! Cuba-Australia get together
Over the weekend of April 30 to March 1, 2012 members of the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society will gather in Canberra from all States of Australia and amost certainly, New Zealand.
Keynote speaker will be Dr Adrian Hearn, a world authority on changes within Cuba's economy and social policies. He is also the top expert on the influence of Chinese culture and particularly Chinese music on
Cuba. When Slavery was abolished in Cuba, the labour gap was filled by scurrilous British agents, in Calcutta, enticing thousands of Chinese coolies to Cuba with lies and promises of great wealth.
Within a generation, the cheated Chinese workers were running profitiable restraurants, laundries and music schools. It is interesting that the illegal US blockade of Cuba is being outmaouvered by Chinese financiers and manufacturers.
The weekend will be held at the Greenhills Conference Centre, 1437 Cotter Road, Cotter. Members of the general public are able to sit through the debates and discussions, though only ACFS members are entitled to vote.
Saturday night will be given over to a top flight concert with interstate performers and local musicians. Some will stay on in Canberra to attend the National Folk Festival.

Music tour of Cuba 2012
This year 12, Aussie musicians, under the guidance of Canberra's Oliver Hague and linguist Rosy Lazzari, travelled throughout Cuba taking part in daily workshops and evening concerts with top line Cuban bands and musicians. All 12 returned to Australia determined to return to Cuba. All were inspired by the level of music education and an appreciation of music throughut the blockaded island.
In March/April 2012, another, bigger contingent will take part in another musicians' work-study tour. The visitors will take in Havana, Cienfuegos, Camagüey, Bayamo and Santiago de Cuba. Apart from the music, everyone will learnto dance the rhythms of the Son, Rumba, Bolero - and more. All this for around $1,200 per person. The price covers all accommodation, inter-city transport in Cuba and numerous visits to places of cultural interest. For the gamut of information, contact: oliver.hague@bigpond.com .
